This week I have been frantically making cards for an upcoming event and each card has been totally different, all highlighting different dies and different papers and none specifically designed for any one celebration. It has been lovely to have no constraints but what became obvious was that the design of the cards would often subconsciously repeat itself.

It seems that my mind saves these layouts and I return to them time and time again, usually when under the pressure of time, because I know that the composition works, no matter what materials I am working with or what celebration the card is aimed at.

I thought I would go back to basics and share one of my simplest layouts and four very different ways in which the sketch is applied.

So this basic sketch is designed around a square card blank folding along the top, for each design there are two patterned papers, a die-cut element or motif, a text panel and a length of ribbon (or twine). In addition to this you will see that two small elements have been added such as buttons, brads etc.

The die-cut element here is a star from the Brenda Walton's Favourite Things collection.

I love the size of the flowers on this die, they are perfect for card making and scrapbooking. I have inked the edges of the paper flowers to create more interest.

This die-cut Butterfly is so pretty and really lends itself to the style of this card.
It is part of a five part set of Thinlits Dies.

As you can see with these five samples, it is useful to have a selection of fail safe sketches to fall back on when you are under the pressure of time as we are all are on occasion. Once you have your design decided then choosing coordinating papers and a few matching elements is the easy part...
enjoy!
